In data drawings, I transfer impressions of naturally occurring data onto my work surface. Often, the data exude their own pigment. What follows is a process of observation and study. At first, nothing appears distinct. Over time, individual points or sequences begin to emerge, and I mark them in pencil, gradually revealing what I see as the data organizes into form.
Marks accumulate. At times, multiple points come into focus at once, creating a sense of visual density, even disorientation. With patience, I return to the slow, rhythmic process of reading and marking. I rotate the panel as I work, shifting orientation to encounter the data from different perspectives. Through this attentiveness, variables such as time and light reveal subtle characteristics that might otherwise go unnoticed. The process unfolds over many sittings until an image gradually resolves—arriving at a kind of internal coherence. |
