B I O
Pamela Shipley is a New Jersey and Florida based artist whose practice is rooted in the observation and interpretation of naturally occurring data. Her fascination with data began in childhood, grounded in close observation and a keen sensitivity to the world around her. These perceptual habits later evolved into graduate study and professional work in arts policy and research, focused on the use of data to inform cultural and educational policy. Her artistic process mirrors this research-based approach: a sustained practice of observing, culling, analyzing, and translating qualitative information drawn from the natural world.
Shipley’s work begins with naturally occurring data from materials found in nature, inviting open-ended interpretation and viewer engagement. In her ongoing body of work, Senescence, she explores the biological processes of maturation and transition within living organisms, through spent flower blossoms. Harvested at the point beyond conventional bloom, the flowers are pressed onto a work surface through the weight and movement of her body in a tactile, performative act. This process produces chromatogram monoprints that reveal the chemical transformations within the organic material.
These works are inherently ephemeral, gradually altered by time and light. Shipley preserves their fleeting vibrancy through digital capture, extending their life as large-scale prints and as the basis for drawings and paintings that amplify their intricate patterns, voluptuous color shapes, and sense of movement.
