Intrigued by the ways we perceive truth and use data to support our viewpoints, I begin my work with raw data collected from nature. These naturally occurring data are not numeric, and no computer is involved in my analysis. Instead, they offer a boundless resource for qualitative exploration. Pressed onto the picture plane, these data reveal themselves and serve as my starting point—lines, shapes, forms, colors, and textures all guide my process. The results reflect what I see.
How we see, and what we see, are deeply idiosyncratic. By becoming fully conscious of our inherent biases, we can cultivate a more empathetic appreciation for both ourselves and one another—and for our differences. The marks I make are my interpretation of the data, reflecting the unique truth, logic, and beauty I perceive. While my biases undoubtedly shape what viewers initially see, my intention is for each viewer to engage with the data in their own way, contemplating it through their own lens.
